Begin your journey in Auckland, a lively harbour city filled with Polynesian heritage and modern flair. Surrounded by water and framed by volcanic peaks, the city is an inviting blend of cultural landmarks, green spaces and stylish waterfront neighbourhoods. Spend your first day settling in, strolling the Britomart precinct or heading up the Sky Tower for sweeping city views.
From here, take a short flight or ferry to Waiheke Island, a relaxed yet refined escape just across the Hauraki Gulf. Known for its boutique vineyards, coastal trails and creative community.
Days 1 - 4
Waiheke is where city life gives way to long lunches and sea breezes. Enjoy a private food and wine tour with visits to some of the island’s most celebrated estates, where tasting rooms overlook vines, olive groves and the ocean beyond.
You’ll have time to explore at leisure – perhaps walking the headland trails, visiting art studios or simply enjoying a quiet morning with coffee and a view.
Matauri Bay, Rotorua & Taupo
Head north to the Bay of Islands, where golden beaches and warm Pacific waters await. At Matauri Bay, life slows to a luxurious pace. Spend your days soaking up the coastal serenity or head out on a private helicopter trip to Cape Reinga, where two oceans combine. Wine lovers can also opt for a scenic lunch stop at a local estate overlooking the water. From high above the headland, the views of the Cavalli Islands are truly unforgettable.
Next, fly south to Rotorua – one of New Zealand’s most culturally and geologically rich regions. Discover bubbling mud pools, steaming geysers and deep cultural ties with local Māori communities.
Days 5 - 12
A privately guided visit to a traditional village can offer unique insight into customs, storytelling and kapa haka performance. You could also enjoy a floatplane tour over the volcanic lakes or simply unwind in the region’s naturally heated pools.
Continue by road to Lake Taupo, where the country’s largest lake offers a peaceful contrast to Rotorua’s geothermal energy. Surrounded by forest and ringed with mountain views, Taupo is ideal for those who love to be outdoors with options including jet boating to the Huka Falls, enjoying a scenic cruise or taking a quiet walk along the lakefront.
Hawke’s Bay, Wellington & Marlborough Sounds
From Taupo, travel east to Hawke’s Bay: one of New Zealand’s most renowned wine regions. With its Art Deco architecture, rolling vineyards and sun-drenched coastline, this is a place made for slow exploration. Join a private wine tour to sample elegant Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc, enjoy a relaxed vineyard lunch, or cycle through the vines at your own pace. For sweeping views, a short hike up Te Mata Peak offers a memorable panorama over land, sea and sky.
Next, head south to Wellington, the country’s compact and creative capital. Perched between hills and harbour, this laid-back city blends urban buzz with natural charm. Explore its museums and galleries, ride the historic cable car to the Botanic Gardens, or simply stroll the waterfront with a coffee in hand.
Days 13 - 19
Board the Interislander ferry for a scenic crossing to the South Island, entering the sheltered coves of the Marlborough Sounds. Your stay here is all about tranquility. Tucked into the bush-lined bays, you’ll have time to kayak the inlets, walk quiet forest trails or enjoy a glass of wine as the sun sinks behind the hills.
Kaikōura, Christchurch & Franz Josef
From the Sounds, travel down the coast to Kaikōura, a small town with big wildlife encounters. Framed by ocean and mountains, this is one of the best places in the world to spot whales, dolphins and albatross. Take to the skies on a scenic flight for a bird’s-eye view of these remarkable creatures, or join a local kitchen experience for a taste of coastal cuisine. There’s also time to explore the artisan galleries dotted along the main street.
Continue south to Christchurch, the South Island’s largest city and a hub of innovation and green space. Discover its mix of heritage buildings and modern design, browse independent boutiques or punt down the Avon River beneath leafy willows. You’ll also travel one of New Zealand’s most iconic rail journeys here, the TranzAlpine, cutting across the Southern Alps to reach the country’s wild West Coast.
Days 20 - 25
Disembark at Greymouth and journey onward to Franz Josef – a base for glacier adventures and rainforest walks. Surrounded by towering peaks and ancient ice, this area is best explored by helicopter and on foot. Weather (and time of year) permitting, enjoy a glacier landing or heli-hike, or keep it grounded with a forest trail and soak in the alpine hot pools at day’s end.
Wānaka, Queenstown & Fiordland
Head south to Wānaka, a relaxed lakeside town surrounded by dramatic peaks and clear waters. It’s a place where you can do as much or as little as you like. Take a 4WD tour into the high country, join a scenic lake cruise or, for the more adventurous, go skydiving for a spectacular bird’s-eye view of the Southern Alps. In the evening, unwind by the fire with a local pinot noir as the sun sets behind the mountains.
From here, it’s a short drive to Queenstown: New Zealand’s adventure capital. With its hard-to-beat food scene, luxury spas and access to everything from private wine tours to heli-skiing, Queenstown offers a blend of energy and elegance.
Days 26 - 34
A private guide can tailor your time to suit your interests – perhaps a helicopter ride to a remote snow landing, a cruise on Lake Wakatipu aboard a vintage steamer, or a scenic gondola ride to panoramic viewpoints high above the town.
Continue into the heart of Fiordland for ancient rainforests, mirror-like lakes and dramatic sounds. Stay near Lake Te Anau, a peaceful base for exploring the region’s natural wonders. Highlights include a glowworm cave experience and a scenic flight over Doubtful Sound. Weather permitting, you’ll also enjoy an overnight cruise through Milford Sound, where waterfalls plunge from sheer cliffs and fur seals bask on the rocks.
Milford Sound Overnight Cruise
Drifting through Milford Sound at dusk is a memory that stays with you. As the day visitors retreat, you’ll be one of the few left to witness the fiord’s quiet transformation: waterfalls catching golden light, mist curling along the cliffs and the stillness broken only by the splash of a fur seal or cry of a seabird. After a gourmet dinner onboard, step out onto the deck for a sky scattered with stars and reflections mirrored in black glass waters. It’s a moment of rare stillness – nature, at her most magnificent, all to yourself.
Otago Peninsula, Omarama, Lake Pukaki & Christchurch
From Fiordland, travel east to the Otago Peninsula: a hidden gem where coastal scenery and rare wildlife take centre stage. Stay in a peaceful rural setting with sweeping views over the harbour, and explore with your local guide. A wildlife cruise offers the chance to spot albatross, sea lions and the rare yellow-eyed penguin. After dark, clear skies make this an ideal spot for a little stargazing.
Next, journey into the Mackenzie Basin, a high country landscape of open skies, golden tussock and glacial valleys. Omarama is a restful base for exploring the clay cliffs, soaking in hot tubs beneath the stars or simply taking in the stillness of the mountains. From here, continue to Lake Pukaki: one of the most photogenic spots in the country. Set against the backdrop of Aoraki / Mount Cook, the lake’s turquoise waters are ideal for scenic walks, heli-hiking or a glacier boat trip depending on the season.
Days 35 - 40
Round off your journey with two final nights in Christchurch. Wander the Botanic Gardens, explore the local food scene or head out on a private helicopter tour to Akaroa for a coastal gin tasting experience. It’s the perfect balance of culture, creativity and calm before your onward journey home.

"New Zealand , Costa Rica and now in Laos"
"Travelwise have done it again! This is the fourth holiday that Dallal and her team have organised for us in far flung Vietnam, New Zealand, Costa Rica and now in Laos. It is just so restful to put your trust in these people - they have always provided such a seamlessly well organised schedule which they are happy to alter according to our wishes before we left. That is another thing by the way, Dallal was so patient with our endless questions prior to travelling which made that part of the experience very reassuring as well. Just fantastic - would highly recommend this team."
