A Selection of the Worlds Most Unique Hotel Suites

By Kim Hart, Travelwise luxury travel specialist

Unknown-2

Let’s be honest - not all suites are created equal.

Some are perfectly lovely. Others are completely unforgettable.

Here’s my handpicked selection of the most original, out-there and just plain fabulous suites I’ve come across in my travels. I’ve even re-ordered them so my absolute favourite is at the top. Expect underwater hideaways, jungle escapes and a train that doesn’t go anywhere (on purpose).

"Underwater in Dubai, cliffside in Peru, barefoot in Polynesia: where do you want to wake up?"

Best underwater suite: Underwater Suite, Atlantis The Palm, Dubai

Sleeping next to sharks isn’t for everyone, but if you’re after wow-factor, this suite delivers. Floor-to-ceiling views of the Ambassador Lagoon surround your bed and bath, so it feels like living inside an aquarium (a very luxurious one). The service is slick, the setting surreal – and waking up to stingrays gliding past your window is something you don’t forget in a hurry.

Best not-for-the-faint-hearted suite: Skylodge Adventure Suites, Sacred Valley, Peru

This one’s not just a suite – it’s an experience. Suspended on the side of a mountain in a transparent capsule, you sleep 400 metres above the Sacred Valley with nothing but panoramic views and pure adrenaline. Getting there involves a climb or zipline. It’s not five-star luxury, but it is five-star bragging rights.

Best suite on a train going nowhere: Kruger Shalati, The Train on the Bridge, South Africa

Permanently stationed on a bridge overlooking the Sabie River, this train-turned-lodge is full of character, comfort and incredible wildlife views. Think clawfoot tubs with elephants wandering below. It’s a nod to safari nostalgia, paired with seriously stylish interiors.

Best suite with a butler: Conrad Algarve, Portugal

This suite is beautiful – high ceilings, an indoor open-air pool and elegant touches throughout – but what makes it truly special is the butler. João has been at the Conrad since it opened in 2012, after working at The Dorchester, The Lanesborough, and Asprey London. He’s old-school in the best way: warm, witty, discreet and remembered by every guest who’s lucky enough to meet him. If you go, ask for him. You’ll see what I mean.

Best jungle suite: Bird’s Nest Pool Villas, Keemala, Phuket, Thailand

Shaped like woven nests tucked into the hillside, these villas offer a cocoon-like jungle escape with private pools, outdoor showers and total peace. You feel miles from anywhere, even though you’re just above the buzz of Phuket. It’s romantic, grounding and gently surreal.

Best suite with a view: &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, Tanzania

This place redefines dramatic. Set right on the rim of the crater, the suites look like a Maasai-meets-Versailles fantasy. There are chandeliers, copper bathtubs and huge windows framing the 2,000-foot drop to the crater floor. Soak in the tub and watch the sunrise over one of Africa’s most iconic landscapes.

Riverhouse Suite Swing

Best idyllic, remote, perfect beach eco suite: Teremoana Residence, The Brando, French Polynesia

This is what barefoot luxury dreams are made of. Set on a private atoll once owned by Marlon Brando, this eco-residence is impossibly private, with its own beach, pool and staff. Solar power, sea breeze and French-trained chefs – all delivered with the lightest footprint and the highest standards.

Best city eco-chic suite with a view: Riverside Suite, 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, New York

Sustainability gets a seriously stylish upgrade here. The suite is full of reclaimed materials and clever green features, but still feels sleek and indulgent. Floor-to-ceiling windows look out over the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan skyline – so it’s as good for the soul as it is for the Instagram feed.

Best arty, Instagrammable, too-cool-for-school suite: The Empathy Suite, Palms Casino Resort, Las Vegas

Where subtlety goes to die – and that’s the point. Designed by Damien Hirst, this suite is outrageous in every direction. Two storeys of curated chaos, with his artwork everywhere, from formaldehyde sculptures to a spot-painted pool table. It’s part penthouse, part gallery, part fever dream.
