How to choose the right Maldivian island

One of the most common concerns I hear about the Maldives is: “Won’t we get bored?”

Usually, it’s one partner who can happily read 12 books on a sun lounger, and the other who wants activities, diving and something to do every day. The key is finding the right island. Because while the Maldives might look similar in brochures (soft sand, turquoise lagoons, overwater villas) each island offers a very different kind of experience.

After living and working in the Maldives for 18 months, I can tell you: the difference between a good trip and an unforgettable one often comes down to the island you choose.

"Some clients want Robinson Crusoe, others want five restaurants and a DJ. The right island offers both, just not at the same time."

Not all islands are created equal.

Every island is beautiful, but luxury means different things here. There’s a big gap between a 4-star property, a polished 5-star and the truly exclusive, ultra-luxury escapes. The very best resorts go beyond aesthetics: it’s about service, atmosphere and how well the staff anticipate your needs before you even know them yourself.

Snorkelling, diving and house reefs.

All resorts offer snorkelling and diving, but not all have direct access to a good house reef. This is important, especially for divers or those who want to snorkel independently without hopping on a boat every day. The best islands offer reefs just metres from the beach or your villa, with vibrant coral and plenty of marine life.

If underwater exploration is a priority, I always recommend choosing a resort with a strong dive centre and a resident marine biologist. They’ll not only guide you but help you understand the ecosystem around you: something that makes the whole experience much more meaningful.

Seaplane or speedboat?

The type of transfer is often overlooked, but it can make a big difference.

Seaplanes feel like an adventure in themselves, but they’re weather dependent and not ideal for younger children. You’ll also need to time your international flight carefully – if you arrive too late in the day, the plane may not take off at all, especially in the rainy season.

Speedboats are more flexible and better suited for off-season travel. Ideally, you want to be 30 to 40 minutes from the airport: far enough to feel remote but not so close you can see the industrial islands.

Small islands vs bigger resorts

If your priority is privacy and a castaway feel, a small island is ideal: slow mornings, quiet beaches and personal service. But if you like variety, opt for a larger island with tennis courts, multiple restaurants or even DJ nights and white parties. The bigger resorts often suit families, food lovers and couples who want more than just peace and quiet.

Tailoring the perfect match

Every experience is different – and so is every Maldivian island. Some people care more about the food, others about the diving. Some want ultra-minimal luxury, others want a social scene. Once I understand your priorities, I can guide you to the island that’ll feel just right. When the island fits, everything else falls into place!
