After landing in Colombo, your journey begins just a short drive away in the peaceful village of Kotugoda. Surrounded by coconut palms and lush greenery, this is the ideal place to unwind after your flight. Settle into a beautiful heritage property with tranquil gardens, a pool to cool off in and plenty of space to simply reset.
Spend your time here easing into the pace of Sri Lankan life. Enjoy high tea under the shade of frangipani trees, wander through manicured grounds or book in for a soothing spa treatment.
Days 1 - 2
If you’re feeling curious, take a short trip to nearby Negombo to explore bustling fish markets, visit local temples or enjoy a coastal walk along the lagoon.
Anuradhapura & the Cultural Triangle
Head north into Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, where ancient cities, sacred temples and beautiful landscapes await. Along the way, you’ll stop at the UNESCO-listed Dambulla Cave Temples, where vivid murals and centuries-old statues fill five atmospheric rock caves.
Your base for the next few nights is a boutique hotel surrounded by jungle and paddy fields – perfect for exploring the region’s highlights at a relaxed pace. Climb to the top of Sigiriya, the iconic rock fortress, and take in breathtaking views over the central plains. Visit the ruins of Polonnaruwa, once a thriving royal capital, and roam its vast complex of statues, temples and royal baths, either by car or bicycle.
Days 2 - 5
One afternoon, you’ll head into Minneriya National Park on a private jeep safari. Home to one of Asia’s largest wild elephant gatherings, this reserve is a joy to explore, with herds of elephants, playful calves and the occasional painted stork spotted around its vast tank. It’s a beautiful blend of culture and wildlife that brings Sri Lanka’s rich heritage to life.
Pasikudah
Trade temples for turquoise as you head east to the sun-drenched shores of Pasikudah. This peaceful bay is known for its shallow waters and soft golden sands, making it ideal for families and anyone looking to unwind by the sea.
Your days here are yours to enjoy at your own pace, whether that’s wading into the calm ocean, building sandcastles or relaxing with a good book under a palm tree. For those seeking adventure, there’s snorkelling on the nearby coral reef, banana boat rides, paddleboarding, or even diving around the wreck of a WWII naval ship.
Days 5 - 9
If you’re up for an early start, we recommend a morning out at sea for a chance to spot dolphins and whales in the wild: an experience that often becomes a highlight of the trip. After action-packed days, evenings are made for sunset strolls and seafood feasts.
Drifting Through Gal Oya: Sri Lanka’s Secret Safari
Far from the usual tourist trail, Gal Oya National Park offers one of the country’s most magical wildlife encounters: a boat safari across Sri Lanka’s largest inland lake. With mist rising from the water and dense jungle rising in every direction, your family will glide silently across the glassy surface, scanning the shoreline for elephants as they drink, graze or even swim between the lake’s scattered islets. It’s a scene that feels almost dreamlike in its stillness and scale. You’ll also spot crocodiles basking on the banks, watch monkeys swinging through fig trees and see brilliant birdlife, from kingfishers to eagles, all from the unique perspective of the water. This slow, soulful adventure brings you closer to the wild in the most peaceful and memorable way.
Gal Oya
Next, venture inland to one of Sri Lanka’s best-kept secrets: Gal Oya National Park. Wild, quiet and wonderfully off the tourist trail, this is the only place in the country where you can experience a safari by boat, drifting across Sri Lanka’s largest lake as elephants swim between islands or graze along the water’s edge.
Settle into your lodge, surrounded by nature. Join a naturalist for a gentle afternoon walk, soaking in the birdlife and learning about the rich biodiversity of the area. The following morning, take to the water on a peaceful boat safari, keeping an eye out for crocodiles sunning on the banks and flocks of storks in flight.
Days 9 - 12
If you’re feeling active, opt for a sunrise hike up Monkey Mountain for sweeping views across misty valleys and endless jungle canopy. Back at the lodge, relax with a fresh breakfast and prepare for an afternoon jeep safari through the lesser-explored Nilgala section of the park, home to elephants, sloth bears, jackals and even the elusive leopard.
Ella
The scenery shifts as you journey into Sri Lanka’s lush Hill Country, arriving in the laid-back town of Ella. Framed by rolling tea plantations and cloud-draped peaks, this is the perfect spot to slow the pace and enjoy the great outdoors.
Settle in and soak up the views with a chilled king coconut or fresh cup of local tea – both excellent accompaniments to your first evening here. The following day, you’ll set off to explore some of Ella’s iconic landmarks, starting with the walk up Little Adam’s Peak. It’s an easy, rewarding trail that winds through tea fields and offers far-reaching views across the valley – especially magical at sunrise or sunset.
Days 12 - 14
Next, make your way to the famous Nine Arch Bridge, a remarkable feat of British-era engineering nestled among the trees. Time it right and you might even catch a train crossing for that picture-perfect moment. If you’ve still got energy to spare, continue on to Ravana Falls, one of Sri Lanka’s widest and most impressive cascades, perfect for a quick splash or scenic photo stop.
Kegalle
Your final stop brings you to Kegalle, set between Colombo and Kandy in Sri Lanka’s low tea country. It’s a gentle, leafy place with rolling hills, spice gardens and timeless rural charm – a lovely way to end your family adventure.
The journey here is part of the experience. Where possible, we’ll arrange the scenic train from Nanu Oya to Gampola, a winding route through tea plantations and misty hills. This is one of the world’s most iconic train rides, with open windows, breathtaking views and vendors passing through selling snacks and sweet tea.
At Rosyth Estate, you’ll find a slower rhythm. Wake to birdsong and explore the estate’s trails on a guided walk through the tea fields, paddy terraces and forest, learning about rural life and local farming traditions. A hands-on cooking class with the estate chef gives you a taste of Sri Lankan cuisine, from aubergine curry to Gotu Kola sambal – and all with a view over the treetops as you eat.
Days 14 - 17
Adventurers can rise early for the Bible Rock hike. It’s a moderate but rewarding climb that ends with panoramic views across the hills. Later, visit the nearby Millennium Elephant Foundation for a truly special experience. Walk alongside these gentle giants as they roam through a coconut grove and learn about the sanctuary’s vital conservation work.
This final chapter is all about immersion, reconnection and reflection, before your driver chauffeurs you back to the airport for your journey home.
