Peru is one of those countries that surprises you at every turn.

You’ll find ancient wonders and adrenaline-fuelled adventures, peaceful lakeside villages and lively markets – all in one trip.

I spent time exploring the highlights and a few hidden gems, from Machu Picchu to Lake Titicaca, with plenty of memorable moments along the way. Here’s what stood out, and what I always tell people interested in visiting to keep in mind.

"Peru is full of awe-inspiring moments - climbing Huayna Picchu, riding a train with live music through the Andes or sleeping in a pod suspended over the Sacred Valley."

Take your time to acclimatise.

Peru’s high altitude is no joke – and I always say not to underestimate it! I made sure to spend time in Lima at the start of my trip, letting my body adjust before heading to higher ground. Coca tea became my daily ritual and helped keep the headaches at bay. Many five-star hotels now pump pure oxygen into their rooms, but nothing beats going slow and giving yourself grace.

The magic (and myths) of Machu Picchu.

Most travellers come to Peru with one goal in mind: Machu Picchu. It’s just as awe-inspiring in person, but getting there doesn’t have to mean doing the full Inca Trail. That hike is a serious undertaking – beautiful, yes, but tough and not ideal for everyone. I opted for the train from Ollantaytambo and spent a night in Aguas Calientes before climbing Huayna Picchu the next morning. The views from the top are unforgettable, and permits are limited, so booking in advance is key.

Trains worth travelling for.

In Peru, train journeys are part of the adventure. One of my favourites was the scenic ride from Cusco to Lake Titicaca on the Titicaca Train. It had a bar carriage, a live band and even a stop at a local market. What could have been a long, tiring day became one of the most joyful parts of the trip.

Pushing my limits in the Sacred Valley

For the thrill-seekers, there’s the Via Ferrata in the Sacred Valley: a vertical climb with steel ladders and cables. Why not overnight in one of the famous Skylodge pods perched on the mountainside. Not for the faint-hearted, but definitely unforgettable. We zipped down after our visit with legs still shaking from the view!

Otherworldly experiences at Lake Titicaca.

Lake Titicaca was another highlight. I visited the famous floating islands – one even made from plastic bottles – and bought textiles directly from the local community. The lake feels almost mythical, and the pace of life there is wonderfully slow.

A scenic finish with ancient mysteries.

To round off my trip, I took a small flight over the Nazca Lines in the south. It’s a bumpy ride (not ideal for nervous flyers), but seeing those mysterious geoglyphs from above felt like stepping into a real-life legend.
