Costa Rica: not just zip-lining through the rainforest

By Nici Davies, Travelwise Central America specialist

Costa Rica is often sold as one big adventure playground...

…all zip-lines, volcano treks and jungle thrills. And while that’s not wrong (you really can fly through the rainforest on a cable if that’s your thing), it’s only part of the picture.

Because there’s so much more to discover beyond the canopy cables and jungle treks. What I love most is the way it caters to both high-energy travellers and those who want to unwind with a slower, more immersive experience.

"Costa Rica isn’t just for adrenaline junkies: it’s for anyone who loves nature, culture and a bit of adventure at their own pace."

Wild encounters in Tortuguero.

Tucked away on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, Tortuguero is all about slow travel and spectacular wildlife. It’s not a beach you’ll be swimming at (the waters are home to crocodiles and sharks!) but it’s an incredible region for boat safaris through rainforest canals. Glide past howler monkeys, caimans, toucans and sleepy sloths as you wind through this beautifully preserved ecosystem.

Time your visit between July and October and you’ll have the rare chance to witness hundreds of green turtles nesting on the shore under the cover of night – it’s one of nature’s most moving spectacles, and a moment you’ll never forget.

Adventure and indulgence in Arenal

The Arenal region is where Costa Rica’s adventurous spirit comes into its own. Whether it’s white-water rafting, zip-lining or hiking across lava fields, there’s no shortage of ways to get your pulse racing. The backdrop, with Arenal Volcano rising above the jungle, is just as impressive as the activities themselves.

But adventure here doesn’t mean roughing it.

After a day of exploring, you can soak in a series of natural hot springs, many of them tucked inside chic resorts surrounded by tropical gardens. It’s also the perfect place to connect with the country’s rural culture, from cacao-making workshops to visiting family-run coffee farms, there’s a rich, grounded rhythm to life here that’s well worth slowing down for.

Beaches, surf and sunsets on the Pacific coast

Over on the Pacific side, Costa Rica reveals its more laid-back side. Manuel Antonio is a firm favourite, combining rainforest walks with postcard-perfect beaches where monkeys swing through the trees and iguanas bask in the sun.

Further north in Guanacaste, the pace slows even more. The beaches are golden, the sea is calmer and the luxury resorts make it easy to forget the outside world exists. It’s ideal for a few days of rest at the end of a more active itinerary – or as a stand-alone escape.

How we do Costa Rica differently

We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all itineraries. Whether you’re here for the adventure, the wildlife, the wellness or a bit of everything, I can create a trip that flows the way you want to travel. That might mean early morning wildlife walks, sailing at sunset or floating in a hot spring with a cocktail in hand.
