Trekking to see Mountain Gorillas

By Kim Hart, Travelwise Wildlife Travel Specialist

Sitting among a family of mountain gorillas in the heart of Uganda’s rainforest is one of the most magical and surreal experiences of my life.

The little ones tumbled over each other, the teenagers hooted from the trees and the silverback sat silently, just metres away watching every single move you make and when he doesn’t like something – he lets you know. You don’t forget that kind of power.

Gorilla trekking is something many people dream about – but it’s also one of those experiences you can’t fully plan for. And that’s the magic. Some treks are short and steady. Others are long, muddy and tough. You’re deep in the forest, on foot, in their world.

"The moment the silverback looks at you, really looks, you understand why this experience is like no other."

The day starts early…

…usually around 6.30am, with a briefing at the ranger station. Groups are small and you’re matched to a route based on fitness and the gorilla family’s location that day. You might reach them in 30 minutes. Or – it might take five hours. There’s no telling, and that’s all part of it.

Once you’re there, you get an hour. One powerful, humbling, completely unforgettable hour. Cameras are allowed (no flash), but most people end up putting them down and just soaking it in. You’re told not to make eye contact with the silverback, this is his territory, and you’re a guest in it.

Preparation makes a big difference.

You’ll want comfortable waterproof walking boots, neutral clothing (long sleeves and trousers), a light waterproof and a small daypack with water and snacks. Gloves help too: think rainforest, not gentle woodland.

It’s not an easy experience – and it’s not meant to be. But if you’re reasonably fit, open-minded and up for the adventure, it’s one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do. This is the epitome of a life changing adventure.

If you’re planning a gorilla trek:

There are a few key things to consider beyond the physical challenge. Permits are limited and in high demand, especially during dry season, so booking early is essential: I usually recommend at least 12 months in advance. I’ll also help you choose the right lodge, because where you stay can shape the whole experience. Some are closer to the park gates for shorter transfers, others offer sweeping views or immersive community programmes.

I only work with trusted local partners.

Both in Uganda and Rwanda because there’s also the bigger picture to think about. Gorilla permits directly support conservation and anti-poaching efforts, but your trip can go even further. Many of the local guides and porters are from neighbouring communities, and I work with partners who ensure fair wages, respectful tourism and meaningful impact. You’re not just witnessing something incredible, you’re helping to protect it for future generations.

That means your trek is not only well-organised, but ethical, sustainable and meaningful too. And that, for me, is what makes it truly special.

Thinking about it?

I’ll help with everything – permits, lodges, prep and how to shape the rest of your trip. Combine with Kenya or Tanzania for more safari or fly to Zanzibar for a contemplative beach stay – we can make it all fit.
