India beyond the golden triangle

India has a way of getting under your skin, and it certainly has for me.

I’ve been travelling there for decades, and with every visit, I uncover something new: a quiet corner, a centuries-old ritual, a dish I’ve never tasted before. It’s a place I return to again and again, not just as a travel specialist, but as someone genuinely captivated by its complexity, beauty and soul.

"From chai in quiet courtyards to starlit dinners in the hills, this is the India most travellers never get to see."

India is vast and layered, a single route can’t capture its full character.

Most first-time travellers start with the Golden Triangle (Delhi, Agra and Jaipur) and it’s a brilliant introduction. But it barely scratches the surface. For me, the magic really begins when you go beyond the obvious. When you swap the checklist for slow mornings with chai and walks through temple courtyards at dusk.

Here’s a route I often recommend for travellers who want a more immersive, textured experience.

From Jaipur to Jodhpur.

After exploring Jaipur’s palaces and bazaars, many fly home, but I often suggest continuing west to Jodhpur. Known as the Blue City, it’s set beneath the imposing Mehrangarh Fort, one of India’s most dramatic and well-preserved. The old town is filled with spice markets, rooftop cafés and a calm sense of daily rhythm.

It’s a brilliant city for food lovers, with bold, hearty flavours and rich thalis. I always recommend a guided food walk, it’s one of the best ways to understand Jodhpur’s heart.

Slow down in Narlai.

A couple of hours from Jodhpur, Narlai is where everything slows. Tucked into the Aravalli Hills, it’s a village of early-morning temple chants, peaceful leopard safaris and candlelit dinners under starry skies. It’s one of those rare places that still feels untouched, where the small moments become the most memorable.

Soak up the elegance of Udaipur.

From Narlai, continue to Udaipur, a city that always feels softer around the edges. With its lakes, palaces and winding lanes, it’s a place that invites you to linger. A private boat ride on Lake Pichola at golden hour is something I always include. It’s the perfect way to slow the pace and take it all in.

End in Mumbai, full of contrasts.

For a vibrant finish, few cities compare to Mumbai. Art deco architecture, fishing villages, buzzing markets and rooftop bars – it’s a city of stories. I always suggest staying at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel: historic, iconic and perfectly placed to explore.

Optional extensions for those with more time.

If you’re keen to go even deeper, there are a few beautiful ways to extend the journey.
Varanasi offers a powerful spiritual experience and the sunrise over the Ganges is unforgettable.

Khajuraho adds ancient carvings and quiet temples, while a tiger safari in Bandhavgarh or Panna gives you the chance to spot wildlife in the wild. Orchha and Jhansi make for a peaceful, final stretch: off the beaten track but full of charm.
